Black mold in Dubai villa: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Springs for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. The recent humidity has been brutal and I'm worried it's making my allergies worse. What's the best way to get rid of this ourselves, or should we call a professional company in Dubai straight away?

Based on your description of a villa in Springs with black, speckled patches spreading behind a wardrobe, this is a classic scenario we encounter in Dubai. The high humidity, especially recently, combined with poor air circulation behind large furniture creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") or Aspergillus niger.

For a spreading infestation, DIY is not recommended. Surface cleaning with bleach or vinegar is a temporary fix that addresses only the visible growth, not the root moisture problem or the microscopic spores and mycotoxins already airborne. Disturbing it incorrectly can aerosolize these spores, significantly worsening your allergy symptoms and contaminating other areas of your villa.

The UAE's Civil Defence and local municipality regulations require that persistent dampness and mold issues be properly diagnosed and remediated to ensure the structural integrity of the property and the health of its occupants. A professional approach is essential.

Our standard protocol involves a certified inspection to identify the moisture source (often condensation from AC units or a hidden leak), air quality testing to determine spore count and species, and then controlled remediation using HEPA filtration, antimicrobial agents, and techniques that prevent cross-contamination. Given the Dubai climate, we also provide recommendations on improving ventilation and maintaining your AC system to manage humidity levels year-round and prevent recurrence.

For a case like this, where the mold is actively spreading and affecting your health, I strongly advise against a DIY attempt. Please contact our team for a professional assessment. You can call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
