Can I clean closet mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed some black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company to check for a bigger problem?

Based on your description of the villa in Al Barsha and the black spots on an interior wall, this is a scenario we encounter frequently in Dubai. The combination of high ambient humidity, especially during summer, and year-round air conditioning creates significant condensation risks within wall cavities. A closet on an interior wall is a classic hotspot, as air circulation is poor and temperature differentials can cause moisture to accumulate.

While a small, surface-level patch might be temporarily addressed with a vinegar solution (avoid bleach, as it does not kill the roots and can exacerbate moisture), self-cleaning is not advisable in this case. The visible mold is likely just the fruiting body; the main root structure (hyphae) could be penetrating the wallboard or behind the skirting. Spores will have already spread into the closet and potentially the room. Disturbing it without proper containment and air scrubbing can significantly increase airborne spore concentration. Furthermore, the critical step is not just removal but identifying and rectifying the source of moisture, which could be a small plumbing leak, thermal bridging, or condensation from the AC system.

Given the property's age and Dubai's climate, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact moisture source and borescopes to assess cavity contamination without destructive testing. This ensures the problem is solved permanently, not just cosmetically cleaned.
