Can I clean black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has felt really damp for the past month, even with the AC running constantly. I finally pulled the wardrobe away from the wall and found a bunch of black fuzzy spots spreading from the corner near the window. We’ve been here five years and never had this issue until after the heavy dew season started. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call in a professional?

Based on your description of a Jumeirah villa and the black fuzzy spots spreading from the corner, my professional recommendation is to call a certified professional immediately. This is not a DIY job for bleach.

The climate in Dubai, especially after periods of high humidity and heavy dew, creates a perfect environment for mold growth. The location behind a wardrobe is a classic sign of a condensation issue, where cool air from the AC meets the warmer external wall, creating a damp microclimate the wardrobe traps. Bleach is a surface-level treatment that does not address the root moisture problem or kill the mold's roots (hyphae) within the building materials. It can also aggravate the situation by releasing a high number of spores into the air and presenting significant health risks upon inhalation.

UAE regulations, particularly in Dubai, emphasize the importance of proper indoor air quality. A professional inspection is critical to determine the extent of the contamination, identify the precise moisture source (which could be condensation, a minor leak, or capillary action), and perform remediation according to IICRC standards. This involves containment of the area, use of HEPA filtration devices to purify the air, and the application of specialized, approved biocides to eliminate the growth at its source.

For a situation of this severity with visible spreading, self-cleaning is inadvisable and potentially hazardous. I strongly advise you to contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan.
