Can I clean my AC mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Mirdif has been blowing out this weird, damp odor for the past couple of weeks, especially when it first turns on. I wiped down the visible vent covers but the smell came right back, and now I’m worried there’s mold growing inside the ducts. Is this something I can investigate and clean myself with a brush and some spray, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Based on your description of a persistent damp odor emanating from your AC in Mirdif, this is a classic symptom of microbial growth, likely mold, within the system. The UAE's high humidity and year-round reliance on AC create a perfect environment for condensation to form inside ductwork, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive.

While wiping visible vents is a good first step, it only addresses a surface-level symptom. The core of the problem is inside the ducts, evaporator coil, and drip pan. Attempting a DIY clean with a brush and spray is highly inadvisable. Without proper training and equipment, you risk inadequate cleaning that leaves the colony intact, and more critically, you could inadvertently aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your villa's living space, significantly worsening indoor air quality and potential health risks.

For a proper assessment and remediation, a professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Certified technicians, like those at Saniservice, use specialized tools including borescopes to visually inspect deep within ducts and air quality monitors to quantify spore levels. Remediation requires industrial-grade HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial agents, and techniques that contain the contamination to prevent cross-contamination, all in line with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards.

Given the potential health implications and the complexity of HVAC systems, we strongly recommend against a DIY approach.
