How to safely clean black mold with kids around?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I just noticed a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet in our main bathroom. It’s been so humid the last few weeks that the walls never seem to fully dry out. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Given the high humidity levels in Dubai, particularly during the summer months, bathrooms are a prime location for mold growth due to constant condensation and inadequate drying. The black mold you've described behind the toilet is a common issue. With children present, safety is the absolute priority.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be attempted with strict precautions. First, ensure the area is well-ventilated; open a window and use an exhaust fan. Equip yourself with an N95 respirator mask, nitrile gloves, and protective goggles to prevent inhalation or contact with spores.

Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that irritate the respiratory system and are often ineffective at killing mold roots on porous surfaces. Instead, use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a proprietary, non-toxic, botanical-based mold cleaner. Apply the solution, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Completely dry the area with a fan afterwards; this is critical as mold thrives on moisture.

However, given that your children are already exhibiting respiratory symptoms like coughing, this indicates possible spore dissemination in the air. DIY cleaning can inadvertently aerosolize these spores, increasing exposure. The persistent humidity you mention suggests an underlying moisture issue that cleaning alone will not solve.

For the safety of your family, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the hidden source of moisture and conduct air quality tests to determine spore count levels. We then perform safe, contained remediation using HEPA filtration and EPA-approved, family-safe disinfectants.
