Black mold behind sofa: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. We keep the AC on most of the time but with the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. Is this something I can just clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check for a bigger problem?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by Dubai's high humidity and the specific microclimate created by furniture placed against an exterior wall. The black speckles are likely Stachybotrys chartarum (toxic black mold) or Aspergillus niger, both common here due to year-round AC operation creating condensation points.

While a surface clean with a diluted bleach solution (1:10 with water) may remove the visible growth, it is a temporary fix and potentially hazardous without proper PPE. The critical issue is identifying and resolving the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often due to a breach in the building's thermal envelope, where warm, humid external air infiltrates and condenses on the cooler interior wall surface behind the sofa, which has restricted airflow.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. DIY cleaning will not address the root cause, and the mold will return. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint hidden moisture pockets and hygrometers to measure relative humidity within the wall cavity, which is crucial for a permanent solution. Furthermore, improper disturbance can aerosolize toxic mycotoxins, contaminating your entire living space.

For a definitive assessment and a remediation plan that complies with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety standards, you should have the area professionally tested and treated.

Call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection. We will identify the exact species and moisture source to ensure the problem is resolved correctly and does not recur.
