Is black mold behind wardrobe dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was rearranging furniture. The room is on the side of the building that never gets any direct sun. Is this dangerous black mold I need to get professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach from Carrefour?

The black spots you've described behind the wardrobe are highly concerning, especially given the symptoms in your children. In the UAE's climate, this is a common issue. The lack of direct sunlight and the constant use of air conditioning creates a perfect environment for condensation and mold growth on cooler exterior walls, precisely behind large pieces of furniture that restrict airflow.
It is impossible to confirm if this is the highly toxic Stachybotrys chartarum (so-called "black mold") without professional laboratory analysis. However, any mold proliferation in a living space poses a health risk, particularly to children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions or compromised immune systems. The coughing you observe is a typical reaction to inhaling mold spores and mycotoxins. Attempting remediation yourself with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface color without addressing the root structure (hyphae) deep within. It can also exacerbate the problem by releasing a high volume of spores into the air during cleaning and adding moisture. DIY methods often lead to rapid regrowth and can spread the contamination throughout your home. For the health of your family, a professional inspection and remediation are essential. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/o-tape sampling to identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination, which is often far greater than what is visible. Saniservice's protocols are designed to meet Dubai Municipality standards for indoor environmental quality, ensuring the mold is safely contained, removed, and the underlying moisture issue is resolved to prevent recurrence.
