Black mold in wardrobe: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall has developed these black speckles in the corners, and all my clothes have started to smell damp even though I run the AC constantly. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting worse since the humidity spiked. Is this something I can clean with vinegar from Carrefour, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by Dubai's high ambient humidity and exacerbated by specific building conditions. The location on an outside wall is a significant indicator; this is often a thermal bridge where warm, humid outdoor air meets the cooled interior surface of your wall, leading to condensation within the wall cavity or on the back of the wardrobe. This hidden moisture source feeds the mold you see on the surface.

While vinegar from Carrefour can remove superficial stains on non-porous surfaces, it is not a solution here. The visible black speckles are likely just the fruiting bodies of a larger colony. The pervasive damp smell on your clothes confirms that the problem is active and has released mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, contaminating your belongings.

A DIY approach is strongly discouraged for several reasons. First, you risk aerosolizing spores during cleaning, spreading the contamination further. Second, you will not address the root cause—the hidden moisture within the wall assembly. Without professional-grade equipment like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters, the source cannot be accurately diagnosed. Furthermore, the UAE's strict health and safety regulations for indoor air quality recommend professional assessment and remediation to ensure the problem is resolved to a safe standard.

Given the extent of contamination (affecting both the structure and contents) and the high probability of concealed growth, a professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Our certified technicians at Saniservice use advanced diagnostics to identify the moisture source, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, and employ industrial-grade HEPA filtration and EPA-approved antimicrobials to remediate the mold and neutralize the odors from your clothing.
