How to treat and prevent mold in my bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started getting small patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes I have stored in there. It’s worse towards the back, and I’m worried the humidity is just trapped with no air circulation. What’s the most effective way to treat the items already affected and what can I do to stop this from happening again, besides just running the AC non-stop?

The mold growth you're describing in your interior closet is a classic symptom of Dubai's high ambient humidity combined with localized condensation and poor air circulation—a common issue we see, especially during the more humid months. The leather items are acting as a nutrient source and the trapped, stagnant air provides the perfect incubator.
For immediate treatment of the affected items, do not attempt to clean them with bleach or other harsh chemicals, as this can damage the leather and only superficially address the issue. Instead, carefully wipe the mold off the leather surfaces outdoors using a soft cloth slightly dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a leather-safe disinfectant. Allow the items to dry completely in a well-ventilated, dry area before returning them to the closet. This is crucial to prevent immediate regrowth. To prevent recurrence, you must address the root cause: the microclimate within the closet. Simply running the AC is not a targeted solution. First, declutter the space to improve air movement. Install a battery-operated dehumidifier rod or hanging moisture absorber (like those from DampRid) specifically designed for enclosed spaces. For a more permanent solution, consider having a professional install a small, passive ventilation grille on the closet door to allow conditioned air from the room to circulate effectively. Given that the mold is visible, a professional inspection is highly recommended. What you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg; mold can proliferate on the walls and contents behind your stored items. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify hidden condensation points and assess the full extent of the problem, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's health and safety guidelines.
