Is the black mold in my villa dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just pulled back the curtains in our master bedroom to find a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind them. We're in a villa in Jumeirah and I'm worried the humidity from the AC is causing it. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here?

Based on your description of black spots spreading on the wall and your children's persistent cough, this situation warrants immediate attention. The black discoloration is likely indicative of a mold colony, and the proximity to your sleeping area raises significant health concerns, especially for children whose respiratory systems are more vulnerable.

In the humid climate of Dubai, where AC systems run year-round, condensation is a primary cause of mold growth. The wall behind curtains is a classic problem area, as the curtain fabric traps cool, damp air against the wall, creating a perfect microenvironment for mold to thrive. While not all black-colored mold is the notorious Stachybotrys chartarum, any widespread mold growth can produce allergens and irritants that can cause coughing, wheezing, and other respiratory issues.

Cleaning visible spots with bleach is a common but flawed DIY approach. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration and does not address the root cause—the moisture problem. More critically, disturbing the colony by scrubbing it can aerosolize millions of spores, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially spreading the infestation throughout your villa.

For the health of your children and to ensure the problem is resolved correctly, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture—whether it's a leaking AC drain line, condensation, or another issue—and take air and surface samples to determine the spore count and species. This scientific approach is crucial for designing an effective remediation protocol that not only removes the visible growth but also addresses the hidden moisture source to prevent recurrence.
