Mold behind wardrobe causing cough: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's a pretty big black patch that looks like it's been there a while. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies in Dubai?

The discovery of a significant black mold patch behind your wardrobe is a serious concern, especially given the persistent cough in your children. In the UAE's climate, this is a common issue. Year-round air conditioning creates significant condensation, particularly behind large furniture placed against exterior walls, which are often cooler. This trapped moisture provides the perfect environment for mold growth, which can remain hidden for years, as you've described.

While a small surface patch might be addressed with a diluted bleach solution, your situation warrants extreme caution. The size of the patch and the fact it has likely been growing for an extended period suggest a deeper infestation within the wall itself. More critically, the health symptoms you describe indicate that mycotoxins and spores are already airborne in your home. Disturbing it with DIY cleaning will aerosolize these particles, drastically increasing exposure and potentially worsening respiratory issues.

According to Dubai Municipality guidelines, significant mold infestations, especially those causing health effects, require professional assessment and remediation. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the hyphae (roots) penetrating porous materials like drywall and concrete.

I strongly recommend you do not attempt to clean this yourself. You require a professional inspection to identify the exact species (some are more toxic than others) and the full extent of the contamination. A certified company like Saniservice will use containment barriers, HEPA filtration scrubbers, and industrial-grade antimicrobials to safely remediate the area and identify the source of moisture to prevent recurrence.
