Black mold on wardrobe from AC leak: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Barsha has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve just found a patch of black mold on the back of the bedroom wardrobe where it’s always damp. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

Based on the situation you've described in your Al Barsha villa, my professional recommendation is to call a professional remediation company like Saniservice immediately. This is not a typical case of surface condensation.

The black mold growth on the back of the wardrobe indicates a persistent moisture issue originating from the AC leak. In Dubai's high humidity climate, this creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, particularly the concerning Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold), which can penetrate porous materials like wood and the backing of wardrobes. A DIY approach with store-bought cleaners like bleach is ineffective; it only removes surface discoloration while the root colony remains within the material, leading to rapid regrowth.

More critically, disturbing the mold during cleaning can aerosolize mycotoxins and spores, significantly worsening indoor air quality and potential health risks. A professional assessment is crucial to determine the extent of the contamination, which often spreads unseen into wall cavities.

Our standard protocol involves a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the full scope. Remediation then involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and employing specialized antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its root. Finally, the source moisture from the AC unit must be repaired to prevent recurrence.

For a health-risk issue of this nature, professional intervention is the only safe and effective solution. I strongly advise you to contact our team for a comprehensive inspection. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
