Black mold in closet: urgent professional help or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years in a Jumeirah villa and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store clothes. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the AC was acting up for a couple of days. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

Based on the details you've provided—a Jumeirah villa, high recent humidity, a temporary AC failure, and the location being a closet with stored textiles—this situation warrants a professional inspection. The combination of these factors creates a high-risk environment for mold proliferation that may extend beyond the visible spots.

In the UAE's climate, particularly during the summer months, indoor relative humidity must be strictly managed by a functioning AC system to stay below 60%, the threshold above which mold growth is promoted. The brief AC failure was a significant event, likely causing a spike in humidity and condensation within the enclosed, poorly ventilated space of the closet. The black spots are a strong indicator of a Type 1 or 2 mold contamination.

While a DIY approach with vinegar is sometimes suggested for surface mildew on non-porous surfaces, it is not recommended here. Vinegar is ineffective against many mold species and will not address the root cause: the elevated moisture condition within the wall cavity or behind the baseboard. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas and your stored clothing.

UAE regulations, particularly in Dubai, emphasize the importance of professional remediation to ensure the health and safety of building occupants and to prevent structural damage to the property. Scrubbing visible growth without identifying and correcting the moisture source is a temporary fix at best.
