Is AC mold in Dubai dangerous for my child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit and now we’ve spotted a small patch of black mold in the corner behind the sofa where my kids play. My youngest has developed a nagging cough that just won’t go away and I’m starting to get really worried. Is this kind of mold in Dubai homes particularly dangerous, and should I be calling a professional remediation company or can I handle it myself with a store-bought spray?

Based on your description of the situation in Jumeirah Village Circle, the presence of a black mold patch combined with a persistent cough in a child is a significant health concern that warrants immediate professional attention. The humid climate of Dubai, combined with year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation, particularly when a leak provides a constant moisture source. The species commonly found in such scenarios, like Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"), can produce mycotoxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are known to irritate the respiratory system, potentially causing or exacerbating conditions like chronic coughs, wheezing, and allergic reactions, especially in children whose immune systems are still developing.

Attempting DIY remediation with a store-bought spray is highly inadvisable. These products often only bleach the visible surface, leaving the root colony within the wall or ceiling substrate intact. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading them throughout your apartment and increasing the inhalation exposure risk for your entire family, potentially making your child's cough worse.

A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/surface sampling to identify the full extent of the contamination, the species present, and the root cause of the moisture. Following UAE best practices, proper remediation involves containment of the area, use of HEPA filtration devices to scrub the air, and specialized antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its source.
