Should my child's persistent cough be checked for mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold on the wall behind the bedroom wardrobe. For the last couple of weeks, my youngest has had a constant runny nose and a cough that just won’t go away, and I'm starting to get worried. Is this kind of persistent cough a common reaction to mold here, and should I be taking him to a doctor to get it checked out specifically for that?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the presence of visible black mold due to the AC leak, it is highly advisable to have your child evaluated by a pediatrician and specifically mention the potential mold exposure. A persistent runny nose and cough that lingers for weeks are classic symptoms associated with mold exposure, particularly in children who are more susceptible to airborne contaminants. In Dubai's humid climate, where air conditioning systems run year-round, condensation and undetected leaks create the perfect environment for mold growth, especially behind fixed furniture like wardrobes where airflow is restricted.

The species commonly found in such scenarios, like Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"), can produce mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that are known respiratory irritants and can trigger or exacerbate allergic reactions and asthma-like symptoms. Self-diagnosis is not recommended, as these symptoms can overlap with other conditions; a medical professional can provide a proper diagnosis.

Concurrently, a professional indoor environmental inspection is critical. DIY cleaning is insufficient and can aerosolize spores, worsening the problem. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/o-surface sampling to identify the full extent of the contamination, including hidden growth within the AC unit and wall cavity, in compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety standards. Following the assessment, our SANISERVICE remediation team employs advanced containment and air scrubbing protocols to safely remove the biological hazard and rectify the moisture source.
