Is this mold dangerous or can I clean it myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a bit, and now we've got these black spots spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried it's making my allergies act up, but I'm not sure if this is a simple bleach-and-scrub job or if I need to call in a professional company to handle it properly.

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The black spots spreading from a leaking AC unit are almost certainly a mold colony, and given the location (Jumeirah Park) and the recent spike in humidity, its growth has been accelerated by our ideal Dubai climate.

The critical factor here is the source of moisture. You have an active AC leak, which means even if you clean the visible mold, the water intrusion will continue, and the mold will return rapidly, often worse than before. The location behind the wardrobe is also a major concern. Mold growth on visible surfaces is often just the "tip of the iceberg"; the main colony is frequently hidden within the wall cavity or behind fixtures, which you cannot properly assess or remediate yourself.

Regarding danger: Yes, this mold can be problematic. The persistent moisture from a leak often leads to the growth of more concerning mold types, not just surface mildew. For individuals with allergies or respiratory sensitivities, exposure to the spores released by this colony will absolutely aggravate symptoms and can lead to more severe health issues over time.

DIY cleaning with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More importantly, improper scrubbing can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, contaminating your entire bedroom and HVAC system.

This is not a simple scrub job. UAE regulations and best practices require containing the affected area, using professional-grade antimicrobials, and, most crucially, fixing the moisture source—your AC unit. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and borescopes to determine the full extent of the damage behind the wall.

For a proper and permanent solution, I recommend you call our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection. We will identify the exact species, map the full extent of the contamination, rectify the AC leak, and execute a controlled remediation following Dubai Municipality guidelines. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
