Should I clean bedroom mold myself or call maintenance in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall facing the outside. It’s gotten worse since the recent humidity spike. What's the best way to handle this in a Dubai villa—should I call maintenance or is this something I can clean myself with products from Ace Hardware?

Based on the location and description, you are likely dealing with a moisture intrusion issue common in Dubai villas. The wall facing the exterior is susceptible to thermal bridging, where the intense outdoor heat meets your year-round AC cooling, creating significant condensation within the wall cavity. This hidden moisture, exacerbated by the recent high humidity, provides the perfect environment for mold growth.

For a patch smaller than one square meter (approximately 3x3 feet), a DIY approach may be feasible. You must first identify and address the moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return. Clean the visible growth with a solution of detergent and water, or a product like Concrobium from Ace Hardware. Never use bleach, as it does not kill mold roots and can worsen indoor air quality. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection during cleaning.

However, given that the mold is inside a closet on an exterior wall, the visible patch is often just the "tip of the iceberg." There is a high probability of more extensive growth within the wall. DIY methods only address surface contamination and not the root cause or hidden reservoirs.

For a definitive solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact condensation points and assess the full extent of the contamination behind the wall. Remediation then involves correcting the insulation or vapor barrier issue and safely removing all affected materials under containment to prevent cross-contamination.

For a proper assessment and lasting solution, it is best to call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Saniservice is equipped to diagnose these Dubai-specific building envelope failures and provide a guaranteed remediation.
