Can I remove this AC mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to have leaked behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, and now there's a big patch of black mold on the wall and a really strong damp smell. We only noticed it a couple of days ago when we moved the furniture to clean. Given how humid it is here and that it's behind a wall, is this something I can tackle myself with bleach spray or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company?

Based on your description, this is a scenario that absolutely requires professional intervention. The presence of a large patch of black mold, a strong damp smell, and the fact that the moisture source is a concealed AC leak behind a wall and wardrobe are all major red flags.

Attempting a DIY removal with bleach is highly inadvisable. Bleach is superficial; it may lighten the visible stain but will not kill the mold roots penetrating the porous drywall or gypsum board. More critically, disturbing the mold by scrubbing it yourself will aerosolize a massive amount of toxic spores, contaminating your entire living space and posing a significant health risk to your family. In Dubai's climate, with its high ambient humidity and constant AC use, the conditions for rapid regrowth are perfect.

Our standard protocol for such cases involves a multi-step process. First, a certified inspector would conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination, often far beyond what is visible. Remediation then involves setting up critical containment barriers with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, followed by the safe removal and disposal of affected building materials. The area is then treated with industrial-grade, EPA-approved biocides and sealed. Finally, a post-remediation verification test is essential to confirm the space is safe and mold-free.

For a situation involving concealed water damage and systemic mold growth, professional remediation is not just recommended—it is a necessity for your health and property integrity. I strongly advise you to contact our team for a professional inspection. Please call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
