Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. I moved it to grab a suitcase and was shocked at the sight. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it's the AC leaking. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Thank you for your question. The presence of black spots spreading behind a wardrobe is a significant indicator of a moisture issue, likely exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use. While a small, isolated patch might be addressed with caution, your situation—characterized by a "bunch" of spots that are actively "spreading"—strongly suggests an established colony that requires professional assessment.

Attempting to clean this with bleach yourself is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall as it only removes the surface discoloration, leaving the root mold structure intact. Furthermore, improper agitation can release a high volume of toxic spores into your living environment, posing health risks. The core issue is the moisture source; without identifying and rectifying it (e.g., a leaking AC condensate drain line, condensation due to poor insulation), the mold will return relentlessly.

Given the extent you've described, a professional inspection is absolutely warranted. Our certified technicians use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and borescopes to pinpoint the exact moisture source and assess the full extent of the contamination hidden within the wall cavity. Remediation then involves engineering controls like negative air pressure and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination, followed by the proper antimicrobial agents to address the infestation at its root.
