Is black mold causing our coughs and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled back the curtains in our master bedroom here in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner of the window frame down the wall, probably from all the humidity. My wife has also been complaining of headaches. Could this mold be the cause of our symptoms and how dangerous is it to deal with ourselves?

Based on your description of the symptoms and the visible growth, it is highly probable that the black mold (often Stachybotrys chartarum or other toxigenic species) is the causative agent for the persistent coughs and headaches your family is experiencing. This type of mold releases mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) into the air, which are known respiratory irritants and can trigger allergic reactions, sinusitis, and neurological symptoms like headaches, especially in vulnerable individuals like children.

The climate in Dubai, particularly the high humidity levels and constant use of air conditioning, creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation. Condensation forms on cold surfaces like window frames and behind curtains, providing the moisture necessary for mold to colonize building materials.

It is critical that you do not attempt to remove this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment will aerosolize a massive quantity of spores and mycotoxins throughout your villa, significantly exacerbating the contamination and your family's exposure. Remediation requires professional assessment, containment with negative air pressure, HEPA filtration, and specialized biocides approved for use in the UAE.

We strongly recommend you cease using the room and seek an immediate professional indoor environmental inspection. Our certified technicians can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the specific species and spore count, which is essential for determining the remediation protocol and for insurance purposes.
