How to permanently fix damp smell and mold in Dubai bedroom?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids' bedroom in our villa in Al Barsha has a persistent damp smell, especially near the window frames. We just pulled out their wooden wardrobe and found a bunch of black spots on the wall behind it. I’m worried it’s from the humidity, but I run the AC constantly. What’s the best long-term solution to stop this from coming back after I clean it?

The issue you're describing is a classic example of localized condensation leading to mold growth, a very common problem in Dubai villas, particularly in Al Barsha. The constant AC use is actually a contributing factor. While the AC dehumidifies the air, it creates a significant temperature differential between the cooled interior and the hot exterior walls and window frames. This causes moisture in the air to condense on these colder surfaces, especially behind large furniture like wardrobes where air circulation is restricted. The black spots are almost certainly active mold growth feeding on the condensed moisture and the organic materials in the wall (e.g., dust, paper from drywall).
A simple cleaning will not provide a permanent solution. The hygrothermal dynamics of the room must be addressed. First, the active mold colony must be professionally remediated to prevent spore dispersal. Secondly, and most critically, you must eliminate the condensation point. This involves improving insulation around the window frame (a common thermal bridge) and ensuring a minimum 2-inch air gap between any furniture and the exterior walls to allow for air circulation. A professional inspection with thermal imaging can precisely identify the exact condensation points and moisture sources. For a long-term fix, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified technicians at Saniservice use moisture meters and thermal cameras to diagnose the root cause and then execute a remediation plan that includes antimicrobial treatment and recommendations to prevent recurrence, fully compliant with Dubai Municipality's environmental health standards.
