Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading, as my allergies have been acting up. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or do I need to call in a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Based on the scenario you've described, particularly the recent high humidity and your allergy symptoms, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. While a small, isolated patch might seem manageable, black mold in a closet storing porous materials like clothing is a significant concern.

The UAE's climate, especially during the summer months, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold due to extreme humidity and the constant temperature differentials caused by year-round air conditioning, leading to condensation in hidden spaces. Using bleach is a common misconception; it is not an effective biocide for porous surfaces and will only bleach the visible colour while leaving the root structure intact. It can also exacerbate the problem by adding moisture. A dehumidifier is an excellent preventive tool but will not remediate an existing colony.

Our standard inspection process involves a comprehensive visual assessment, moisture mapping with thermal imaging cameras, and air quality testing to determine the spore count and species type. This is critical because what appears as a small patch can often be the symptom of a larger, hidden problem within the wall cavity, potentially stemming from a minor plumbing leak or condensation from the AC system. Furthermore, improper DIY disturbance can aerosolize toxic spores, significantly worsening indoor air quality and your allergy symptoms.

For a thorough assessment and safe, guaranteed remediation, you should contact a certified professional. Saniservice's team is trained in the latest protocols and can provide a definitive solution. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
