Can I clean black bathroom mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's master bathroom has started turning black, and there's a persistent damp smell even though we run the exhaust fan. It's been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in last month. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaner to handle it?

Based on the symptoms you've described in your Jumeirah villa, you are dealing with a classic case of persistent mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and condensation from year-round air conditioning use. While a supermarket bleach spray might remove the superficial black discoloration on the grout, it is a temporary and ineffective solution. Bleach is water-based, meaning it can actually feed the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating deep within the porous grout and behind the tiles, causing the problem to return worse than before. The persistent damp smell is a significant indicator that the growth is not superficial.

The humidity has likely created a moisture source behind the tile, potentially from a small leak in the plumbing or, more commonly, from condensation within the wall cavity. A professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use specialized tools like borescopes and moisture meters to identify the exact source of moisture, which is the only way to achieve a permanent solution. DIY attempts often spread the spores and exacerbate the problem.

For a lasting remediation, the affected grout must be professionally removed, the area treated with EPA-approved, specialized biocides to neutralize the mold at its root, and the moisture source completely resolved before re-grouting and sealing. Our protocols at Saniservice are designed to meet and exceed Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards for indoor air quality.

Given the extent you've described, this is not a DIY job. I advise you to call our team for a comprehensive inspection. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
