Is black mold causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed what looks like black mold along the bottom edge of the carpet in our kids' bedroom, which is on the colder outer wall. Both of them have had this persistent dry cough for the last couple of months that just won't go away, and I'm starting to get really worried. How dangerous is this kind of mold in Dubai's climate, and should I take them to a doctor for the coughs before we even get the mold professionally cleaned?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the visible mold growth, it is highly plausible that the black mold along the carpet edge is contributing to your children's persistent dry cough. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and continuous air conditioning use are prevalent, condensation often forms on colder exterior walls. This creates a persistent damp environment, which is the primary catalyst for mold growth on porous materials like carpet and drywall.

The type of mold is significant. While many molds are allergenic, the term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, which is a toxigenic species known to produce mycotoxins. Inhalation of its spores can cause chronic respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, headaches, and fatigue, particularly in children who are more vulnerable.

My professional recommendation is a two-fold action plan. First, you should absolutely consult a pediatrician, informing them of the potential mold exposure. This documents the health concern and rules out other causes. Second, do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, drastically increasing exposure. This situation requires professional assessment and remediation.

Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging to identify the exact moisture source and conduct air and surface sampling to speciate the mold and determine the spore count in the bedroom's air. This data is critical for implementing a safe, effective remediation plan following UAE environmental hygiene standards.
