Can I remove black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of the master bedroom closet, probably from the last humid spell. It’s about the size of a dinner plate and the wall feels damp. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional company? What’s the typical cost range for a job like this in Dubai?

Based on the size and description of your mold issue in Jumeirah, I strongly recommend a professional inspection rather than a DIY approach. A patch the size of a dinner plate, coupled with a damp wall, indicates an active moisture source that must be identified and rectified. The high humidity levels in Dubai, especially during summer and recent humid spells, create a perfect breeding ground for mold, often exacerbated by year-round AC use which can cause condensation if not properly maintained.

Using bleach from a hardware store is a common misconception and is not an effective or recommended solution. Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces like drywall or wood; it only bleaches the visible colour, leaving the root structure intact. It can also exacerbate the problem by introducing excess moisture and releasing harmful spores into the air.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation follows international IICRC standards and involves containment of the affected area, use of HEPA filtration to capture spores, antimicrobial treatment, and, crucially, identifying and eliminating the source of the moisture. The cost for a professional assessment and remediation of a problem of this scale in Dubai can typically range from AED 1,500 to AED 4,000, depending on the extent of the moisture damage and the required repairs.
