Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity seeping in from the AC unit on that wall. The patch is about the size of a large dinner plate and looks pretty nasty. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

Based on the description of your situation, I strongly recommend you do not attempt to remove this mold yourself with supermarket bleach. The presence of a large, established patch of black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum), coupled with your children's respiratory symptoms, elevates this from a simple cleaning task to a potential health and contamination hazard.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, which it appears your wardrobe wall is made of. It only bleaches the surface pigment without killing the roots (hyphae) deep within the material. The moisture from the bleach can even feed the remaining mold, causing it to regrow more aggressively. More critically, DIY scrubbing disturbs the colony, releasing a massive cloud of toxic spores into your bedroom air, which you and your children will inhale, potentially exacerbating the coughing.

In Dubai's climate, this is a systemic issue. The humidity and constant AC use create significant condensation, which is the root cause. Simply wiping the visible mold does nothing to address the moisture source. A professional inspection is essential to identify the exact species, the extent of the contamination inside the wall cavity, and the precise moisture intrusion point from the AC unit.

For a case of this size and with health symptoms present, professional remediation is not just advised; it is necessary for your family's safety. Our certified team at Saniservice uses EPA-approved biocides, advanced containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination, and HEPA filtration to remove spores from the air. We then identify and rectify the moisture source to prevent recurrence.
