Is black mold behind my wardrobe dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but the wall feels damp and the room has a weird stale smell. How urgent is this for me to deal with, and should I get a professional or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The presence of visible black spots, a damp wall, and a stale odor, coupled with your children's respiratory symptoms, strongly indicates an active mold infestation. In the UAE's climate, with its high humidity and constant air conditioning use, conditions are ideal for mold growth behind furniture where condensation and poor airflow are common.

Attempting to remove it yourself with bleach is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, improper disturbance can aerosolize highly concentrated spores, significantly worsening indoor air quality and potentially exacerbating your children's health issues. Exposure to certain types of mold, like Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"), can cause persistent coughing, wheezing, and other allergic reactions, particularly in children.

According to UAE health and safety guidelines, significant microbial growth within a living space necessitates assessment and remediation by certified professionals. We must identify the moisture source—likely condensation from the AC or a hidden leak—to prevent recurrence. A professional inspection includes air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol.

For the safety of your family, I strongly advise against DIY methods. Contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection. We are equipped with the technical expertise and UAE-compliant protocols to safely remediate the mold and identify the underlying moisture problem. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment. This is an urgent matter for your children's health.
