How to remove closet mold and control humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed a few small patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes I store in there. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and even though the AC is always on, that particular closet feels damp and cold to the touch. I'm worried about it spreading to our clothes and affecting our health. What's the most effective way to kill this mold and what can I do to control the humidity in a closed closet space to stop it from coming back?

Based on your description, you are dealing with a classic case of localized mold growth driven by condensation and high humidity, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. The cold interior wall and the constant AC operation create a significant temperature differential, causing moisture to condense inside the enclosed closet space, especially on organic materials like leather.

For immediate remediation, the affected leather items must be addressed first. Do not attempt to clean them with bleach or ammonia-based cleaners, as these can damage the material and are ineffective at killing mold at the root. Instead, carefully wipe the mold off the surface using a soft cloth slightly dampened with a solution of warm water and a leather-safe disinfectant. Allow the items to dry completely in a well-ventilated area away from the humid closet before considering returning them.

To control the humidity and prevent recurrence, you must address the condensation. This is a two-part process:
1. Increase Airflow: The stagnant, damp air is the primary culprit. Leave the closet doors open for several hours each day to allow conditioned air from the room to circulate. For a more permanent solution, consider installing a louvered door or small, battery-operated ventilation fans designed for closets.
2. Manage Moisture: Use a commercial desiccant dehumidifier, such as silica gel canisters or hanging bags, inside the closet. These are ideal for small, enclosed spaces and will actively absorb excess moisture from the air. Also, ensure your room's AC unit is serviced and functioning optimally to maintain low humidity levels throughout the entire space.

Given that the mold is on personal items and the cause is identified, this may be a manageable DIY project. However, if the mold growth is more extensive than a few small patches, if it has spread to the wall itself, or if you or family members begin experiencing respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full scope and ensure it is remediated safely and effectively according to UAE health and safety standards.
