How to clean and prevent closet mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom's walk-in closet, which is always closed, started smelling really damp after the humid weather last week. I finally checked behind the clothes and found a bunch of black spots spreading on the back wall. We keep the AC on, but I guess the lack of air circulation in there is a problem. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth due to localized high humidity and lack of air circulation, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. The black spots are likely Aspergillus or Cladosporium. The first step is to never disturb it, as this releases spores.

For a small, contained area (less than 10 sq. ft), you can attempt a careful cleaning. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by sealing the closet doorway with plastic sheeting. Use a HEPA vacuum to gently remove any loose spores from the surface. Then, scrub the affected wall with a solution of detergent and water, followed by a thorough wipe-down with a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide. Bleach is not recommended as it only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the root structure. Allow the area to dry completely with enhanced ventilation before replacing any items.

However, the critical step is addressing the root cause. The constant AC creates a significant temperature differential between the cooled room and the warmer closet wall, leading to condensation—the primary source of moisture. Simply cleaning without solving this will guarantee recurrence.

For a permanent solution, you must improve air circulation. Install a louvered door or keep the closet door ajar. Consider placing a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or a desiccant bag inside. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly and that its condensate drain line is not clogged, as this can contribute to overall humidity issues.

For a confirmed and lasting resolution, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and condensation points precisely, followed by industrial-grade HEPA air scrubbing and application of specialized anti-microbial coatings to prevent regrowth.
