Black mold behind wardrobe: safe removal and leak check?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. What's the best way to get rid of this safely, and should I get my building's maintenance involved to check for a leak?

The black spots you've described behind the wardrobe are a classic indicator of a mold issue, a common problem in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation that can form on cooler exterior walls. The wall facing the outside is a prime location for this, as the temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior creates a perfect environment for mold growth, especially when airflow is restricted by furniture.

Safely addressing this requires a methodical approach. First, do not attempt to dry scrub the mold, as this will aerosolize the spores. For a small, contained area, you can carefully clean it with a solution of detergent and water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the location behind a wardrobe, the extent of growth is likely larger than visible, and the root cause must be identified.

This situation strongly warrants a professional inspection. The growth could be solely due to condensation, but it could also indicate a more serious issue like a hidden plumbing leak or a breach in the building's external waterproofing (a common concern under UAE building codes). A certified mold inspector will conduct moisture mapping and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact moisture source. They can also perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and concentration, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol.

I highly recommend you involve your building's maintenance team to investigate potential external leaks, as this is ultimately their responsibility. For a comprehensive assessment and safe, guaranteed remediation that addresses the root cause, you should contact a specialist like Saniservice. They are equipped to handle this in accordance with Dubai Municipality guidelines and can ensure the problem is resolved completely.
