How to treat and prevent closet mold on interior wall?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has been smelling a bit damp lately. I finally cleared it out this weekend and found a few small black speckles on the back wall and some of our leather bags. We run the AC constantly, but the dehumidifier mode doesn't seem to be enough in that enclosed space. What’s the best way to treat this small area and prevent it from coming back, especially with the humidity here?

The issue you're describing is a common one in Dubai, particularly with closets on interior walls. The constant AC operation creates a significant temperature differential between the cooled room and the warmer wall void, leading to condensation—a primary catalyst for mold growth, even in small, enclosed spaces. The black speckles are likely a mold colony, and the damp smell confirms active microbial growth.

For immediate treatment of this small area, safety is paramount. Isolate the closet and wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the affected wall surface with a solution of detergent and water, then follow with a disinfectant like diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide. However, this addresses only surface contamination. The leather bags require professional cleaning to prevent spores from spreading and damaging the material.

Prevention is critical in our climate. The enclosed space lacks air circulation, allowing humidity to spike. Firstly, leave the closet doors ajar for periods each day to equalize temperature and humidity with the room. Secondly, consider installing a small, battery-operated humidity reader to monitor levels. If consistently above 60%, a compact, portable deshumidifier placed inside the closet for a few hours daily can be highly effective. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly, as a poorly maintained system will not effectively remove humidity from the air.

Given the location on an interior wall, there is a possibility the growth is more extensive within the wall cavity itself. For a comprehensive assessment to ensure the root cause is identified and properly remediated to Dubai Municipality standards, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct advanced moisture mapping and air quality testing to guarantee the problem is fully resolved.
