Can I remove this mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the master bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a while, and now I’m seeing a few small black patches of mold spreading from the corner of the wall. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the musty smell is still there. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or is it time to call a professional?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a recurring AC leak, visible black mold growth on the wall, and a persistent musty odor—this situation has progressed beyond a simple DIY cleaning task. The vinegar wipe was a good initial attempt, but it is insufficient for a problem of this nature.

In the UAE's climate, AC units are a constant source of condensation. A leak indicates a problem, either with the drain line being blocked or the unit's drip pan being compromised. This creates a continuous moisture source, which is the primary fuel for mold growth. The visible patches on the wall are likely just the surface manifestation; the moisture has almost certainly wicked into the drywall and the underlying carpet and padding, creating a larger, hidden reservoir of mold.

Attempting to clean this with a stronger cleaner will only address surface-level spores and will not eliminate the root cause: the hidden moisture and colonization within the building materials. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and air filtration can also cause spores to become airborne and spread to other areas of your home.

According to Dubai Municipality guidelines, property owners are responsible for maintaining a healthy indoor environment and preventing conditions that lead to microbial growth. For a case involving HVAC systems and structural materials, a professional inspection is strongly recommended.

A certified mold inspector from a company like Saniservice will use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the full extent of the water intrusion and hidden mold growth. They can then execute a remediation plan that includes containment, HEPA filtration, and the safe removal of affected porous materials like drywall and carpet, followed by a hygienization process to ensure the problem is resolved at its source.

For a thorough assessment and to prevent health risks and further property damage, it is time to call a professional. Please contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and remediation quote.
