Can I remove mold from clothes myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Mirdif has been feeling extra humid lately and I just pulled out our winter clothes from the storage room to find several jumpers with black and greenish spots all over them. It's been like this for a couple of weeks since the weather changed. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar from the supermarket, or is it time to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Based on your description of the situation in your Mirdif villa, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by the high humidity levels we are currently experiencing in Dubai. The black and greenish spots on your clothes are likely colonies of Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common indoor molds that thrive in the conditions you've described.

For a small, isolated contamination on a few non-valuable items, a DIY approach can be attempted. You can soak the affected garments in a solution of warm water and a detergent specifically designed for mold removal, not standard bleach. Household bleach is often ineffective on porous materials like fabric and can damage fibers, while vinegar lacks the biocidal power to kill the spores at the root. After soaking, the clothes must be washed at the highest temperature the fabric allows and sun-dried, as UV light is a natural spore killer. Crucially, you must identify and rectify the source of humidity in the storage room; otherwise, the mold will return. This likely involves checking for poor ventilation, water leaks, or excessive condensation from AC units, which is a perennial issue in our climate.

However, given that this has affected several items and is a symptom of a wider humidity problem in the villa, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Mold on visible surfaces like clothing is often just the tip of the iceberg; spores will have contaminated the air and likely colonized other areas like walls, ceilings, and storage boxes. Improper cleaning can aerosolize these spores, spreading the problem further. In the UAE, professional remediation follows strict protocols for containment, air filtration, and the use of UAE-approved biocides to ensure the infestation is fully eradicated and your indoor air quality is restored.
