How to remove and prevent black mold in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots along the bottom of the bedroom wall where our wardrobe is. The room is in our villa in Al Barsha and it's always the coldest one because it gets the least sun. We run the AC constantly but it feels a bit damp in there. What's the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black spots on a cold, shaded wall with a constant AC unit and a persistent damp feeling—this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai villas, particularly in areas like Al Barsha. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold surface (thermal bridge), and the humidity from the air condenses on it, creating the perfect damp environment for mold, most likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, to thrive.

For immediate cleaning on a small area, wearing an N95 mask and gloves is non-negotiable. Do not dry brush it, as this aerosolizes spores. Scrub the affected area with a solution of detergent and warm water. After cleaning, disinfect with a solution of no more than 1 part household bleach to 4 parts water, ensuring adequate ventilation. However, this is only a superficial fix.

The root cause is the condensation. To prevent recurrence, you must address the environment. First, improve air circulation behind the wardrobe; even a few inches of space can make a significant difference. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly and set to a consistent temperature that reduces humidity levels inside the room, ideally between 45-55% RH. A standalone dehumidifier can be highly effective in a problematic room.

For a permanent solution, the underlying issue must be professionally diagnosed. This requires a certified mold inspection to assess the extent of growth, identify the species, and use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the condensation and any potential hidden leaks. DIY cleaning often disturbs the colony, spreading spores to new areas without addressing the moisture source.

For a thorough assessment and expert remediation that complies with Dubai Municipality standards, I strongly recommend contacting our specialists at Saniservice.
