Can I clean black mold in my AC closet myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell that’s settled into the bedroom closet. I opened it up yesterday and found a patch of black spots on the back wall and some of our shoes. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because the humidity has been so high lately. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on the description of a damp smell and visible black spots on the wall and contents of a closet serviced by an AC unit, this is a strong indicator of an active mold colony. In Dubai's high humidity climate, this is a common issue where condensation from AC systems creates persistent dampness, the primary condition mold needs to grow.
Attempting to clean this yourself with a surface agent like bleach is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wood, as it only removes the surface discoloration without addressing the root hyphae (the fungal roots) deep within the material. This can aggravate the spores, causing them to become airborne and spread to other areas of your home. More critically, the presence of mold in the closet suggests a potential issue within the AC system itself, such as a clogged drain line or contaminated insulation, which requires specialized equipment to diagnose and address. According to UAE health and safety guidelines, proper remediation involves containment of the affected area to prevent cross-contamination, professional-grade HEPA filtration to remove airborne spores, and the use of EPA-approved antimicrobial agents specifically designed for porous surfaces. For your safety and to ensure the problem is completely resolved, a professional inspection is mandatory. I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional like Saniservice. Our experts can conduct a thorough assessment to determine the moisture source, the extent of the contamination, and execute a complete remediation protocol.
