Black spots in closet: DIY fix or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. The wall feels a bit damp to the touch, and I'm worried it's been spreading behind the shelving unit since the last heavy fog we had a few weeks ago. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call the building management first?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels, especially during foggy seasons. The dampness you feel indicates an active moisture source, likely condensation from temperature differentials or a potential leak.

Your first step should absolutely be to inform your building management or landlord in writing. According to UAE tenancy law, the property owner is generally responsible for the structural integrity of the building, which includes addressing leaks and resultant dampness from common areas or the building envelope. They need to investigate the source of the moisture, as simply cleaning the visible mold will be a temporary fix if the underlying water intrusion is not resolved.

For a small, surface-level cluster, a careful DIY approach can be taken while you await the building's response. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. However, this is only for non-porous surfaces. If the drywall is porous and the mold has penetrated, cleaning the surface will not remove the root structure.

Given that the wall feels damp and you suspect growth behind the shelving, this is beyond a simple surface clean. Disturbing it could aerosolize spores throughout your home. We strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact moisture source and extent of the infestation, which is often far greater than what is visible. We provide a detailed remediation protocol to ensure it is removed safely and effectively.
