How to remove and prevent black mold in humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. The AC vent is right above it and the room always feels a bit more humid than the rest of the apartment in Sharjah. I'm really worried it's the start of black mold and I want to nip it in the bud before it gets worse, especially with my baby sleeping in here. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back, considering our humid climate?

Based on your description of the location (interior wall, near an AC vent), the persistent humidity, and the presence of a baby, this situation warrants immediate and careful attention. In Sharjah and across the UAE, our high ambient humidity combined with year-round AC use creates prime conditions for mold growth, often due to condensation forming on and within cooler surfaces.

For a few small spots, you can attempt a preliminary clean using a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface discoloration and does not address the hyphae (roots) penetrating the porous wall material. Scrub the area gently. However, this is only a temporary surface solution.

The critical step is identifying and eliminating the moisture source. The AC vent directly above is a significant clue. The issue could be insufficient insulation around the ductwork causing condensation, a clogged condensate drain line, or the AC unit itself not dehumidifying the space effectively. Furthermore, an interior wall suggests the problem could be hidden within, potentially from a minor plumbing leak or capillary action from the slab.

Given the health risks associated with mold spores, especially for infants, and the high probability of a hidden moisture issue, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact condensation source and assess the full extent of growth, which is often not visible to the naked eye. DIY attempts can often disturb the colony, causing a significant release of spores and cross-contamination.
