Should I clean closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has started to get these black speckles on the back wall, and all our clothes have a damp smell even though the AC is always on. It's gotten way worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Am I okay to just scrub this down with bleach myself, or is this a sign of a bigger problem that needs a professional?

Based on the description of your Mirdif villa, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by the UAE's high ambient humidity, particularly during the recent spike. The black speckles are likely active mold colonies, and the persistent damp smell on your clothes confirms a significant moisture issue.
Scrubbing with bleach is a common but ineffective and potentially hazardous DIY approach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold. More critically, it introduces harsh chemical vapors into your living space and can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture. The presence of mold in a closet, especially on an exterior wall, is a strong indicator of a bigger problem. The root cause is likely persistent elevated humidity, potentially from a combination of factors: inadequate AC ventilation within the closet space, temperature differentials causing condensation inside the walls (common with villa construction here), or even a minor, hidden plumbing leak. Given the climate in Dubai, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We would identify the exact species of mold (some can be more problematic than others) and, most importantly, use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture. Without addressing this source, the mold will return relentlessly. For a definitive diagnosis and a permanent solution, I advise against DIY methods.
