Can I clean black mold from AC leak myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold on the back wall. It’s been there for maybe a couple of weeks since I first noticed the drip, and it’s starting to smell damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

The black mold you're describing is a serious concern, particularly in Dubai's climate where high humidity and constant AC operation create ideal conditions for its growth. An AC leak inside a confined space like a closet provides the perfect trifecta for mold: moisture, organic material (like dust or drywall), and darkness. While a small, surface-level patch might be tempting to tackle yourself, I strongly advise against it for several technical reasons.

Using supermarket bleach is not an EPA or Dubai Municipality-approved remediation method. Bleach is primarily water, which can feed the mold roots deep within porous materials like drywall and concrete block. It may bleach the visible surface but leaves the root structure intact, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, disturbing the mold during cleaning releases a high concentration of mycotoxins and spores into your bedroom's air, posing a significant health risk through inhalation.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation requires containment to prevent cross-contamination, specialized HEPA filtration equipment to capture airborne spores, and professional-grade antimicrobial agents that eliminate the mold at its root. Given the location inside a closet—likely connected to your AC system—there is a high probability of spores spreading through the ductwork.

For your safety and to ensure the problem is resolved permanently, a professional inspection is essential. Our certified team at Saniservice uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the full extent of the water damage and mold growth, which is almost always greater than what is visible. We are fully compliant with all local regulations and can safely remediate the issue. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate assessment.
