Mold in Dubai villa closet: DIY or professional treatment needed?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has a persistent damp smell coming from the master bedroom closet, especially since the humidity started spiking a few weeks ago. I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes I stored in there and found several sweaters with dark green and black fuzzy patches on them. I'm really worried it's spread to the walls behind the shelves. Is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution first?

Based on your description, this situation requires immediate professional assessment and should not be handled as a DIY project. The dark green and black fuzzy patches on your clothes are a strong visual indicator of active mold growth, and the persistent damp smell suggests a significant underlying moisture issue. In Dubai's high humidity climate, especially during summer months, condensation and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold to thrive inside wall cavities and behind furniture, which is likely the case behind your closet shelves.

Attempting to clean this with a vinegar solution addresses only the surface contamination you can see, not the root cause of the moisture or the hyphal fragments deep within the porous materials. Disturbing the mold by cleaning yourself can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of the villa and posing health risks. Furthermore, UAE regulations and building best practices often require professional remediation for health and safety, particularly in residences of this nature.

A certified mold inspector will conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping and possibly air quality testing, to identify the exact source of the moisture—be it a condensation issue from the AC, a minor leak, or rising damp—and the full extent of the colonization. They will then execute a controlled remediation plan that includes containment, air scrubbing, and the proper disposal of contaminated porous materials like your affected clothing.

For a villa in Jumeirah, we strongly recommend you seek a professional inspection immediately to protect your property and health. Contact our specialists at Saniservice for a thorough evaluation. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
