How to remove black mold from closet quickly?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the fastest way to get rid of it myself, and should I be calling the building management about this?

Based on the description, you are dealing with a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity interacting with cold surfaces. The wall facing the outside is likely a "cold bridge," where the interior surface temperature drops below the dew point, causing moisture to condense and create the perfect environment for Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) to flourish, especially on organic materials like dust or the cellulose in drywall.

For immediate, small-scale removal, personal protective equipment is non-negotiable. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by sealing the closet with plastic sheeting. Scrub the affected patch with a solution of detergent and warm water. Do not use bleach, as it only discolors the surface and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the roots (hyphae). After cleaning, thoroughly dry the area with a fan. However, this is only a superficial fix.

The critical step is moisture control. You must identify and eliminate the source. This is almost certainly a building envelope issue related to insulation or a failing external seal. This is where building management must be involved. According to Dubai regulations, the structural integrity and waterproofing of the building are the responsibility of the Owners' Association or building management. You should formally report this to them immediately, as it is a potential health hazard and indicative of a problem that could affect other units.

Given that the mold is on an exterior wall and has likely been growing for some time, there is a high probability of growth within the wall cavity. Surface cleaning is insufficient. A professional inspection with thermal imaging and moisture meters is essential to assess the full extent of the problem.
