Can I clean black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah 3 has felt really damp since the weather cooled down in December. I just pulled our king-sized bed away from the wall and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, and the wallpaper is starting to peel. We run the AC but the room always feels humid. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from ACE, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Based on the symptoms you've described—significant black mold growth behind a large bed, peeling wallpaper, and a persistent damp feeling—this is a serious issue that requires professional intervention. The combination of a hidden moisture source and extensive visible mold indicates a problem beyond surface-level contamination.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use are constant, condensation within wall cavities is a common culprit. This is not a simple case of surface condensation you can wipe away. The mold behind your wallpaper suggests moisture is trapped within the wall itself, likely due to a breach in the vapor barrier, an underlying plumbing leak, or insufficient insulation causing thermal bridging and condensation. Attempting to clean this yourself with bleach from ACE is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wallpaper, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root hyphae (root structure). It can also aggravate the problem by adding moisture and releasing a high volume of harmful spores into the air, posing a significant health risk to your family.

UAE regulations and best practices for mold remediation, particularly for a case of this scale, dictate controlled containment, professional-grade HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure complete spore removal and prevent cross-contamination to other areas of your villa.

Given the extent of the damage and the potential health implications, we highly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment to identify the exact moisture source, assess the full extent of the contamination, and execute a safe, effective remediation protocol.
