Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a bunch of black spots in the corners since the humidity started rising a couple of weeks ago, and my clothes are starting to smell a bit damp. I tried wiping it down with vinegar, but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or is it time to call a professional?

Thank you for your question. This is a very common issue we encounter in Dubai, particularly on external walls during periods of high humidity, which act as a thermal bridge and create a perfect environment for condensation and subsequent mold growth.
The fact that the mold reappeared after a superficial cleaning with vinegar is a significant indicator. Vinegar is a mild biocide and may kill surface spores temporarily, but it does not address the underlying moisture source or penetrate porous materials to kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold. The damp smell on your clothes confirms that active microbial growth is present, and spores are contaminating your belongings. For a small, isolated area, a DIY approach using a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner (not bleach) can be attempted. However, given the location on an external wall, the problem is likely more entrenched. The porous plasterboard and insulation behind could be compromised, requiring professional assessment with moisture meters and thermal imaging to determine the full extent. In the UAE, remediation must adhere to strict guidelines like the DM Guidelines and ASTM standards to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence through proper containment, air scrubbing, and antimicrobial treatment. Attempting a full remediation yourself risks cross-contamination and inadequate removal. Given the recurrence and the property damage to your clothing, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify the moisture source and provide a definitive solution.
