Should we test black mold in closet with a baby?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside and the room always feels a bit damp. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I'm worried it's more serious, especially with our baby sleeping next door. Should we call a professional company to get it tested, or is this a DIY job?

Given the presence of black spots in a damp closet on an external wall and, most critically, a baby in the adjacent room, my professional recommendation is unequivocally to call for a professional inspection and testing. This is not a situation for a DIY approach with bleach.

Bleach is a superficial solution that only removes the visible discoloration on non-porous surfaces; it does not address the underlying moisture problem or effectively kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall and concrete. In Dubai's high humidity climate, exacerbated by year-round AC use causing significant condensation on cold external walls, the moisture source will persist, and the mold will return rapidly. More concerningly, bleaching can aggravate the situation by releasing a large number of mold spores and harmful bleach fumes into the air, potentially contaminating the entire room and HVAC system, putting your infant at greater risk.

Infants are highly vulnerable to mold exposure due to their developing respiratory and immune systems. Exposure can lead to chronic respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and other health complications. The specific species must be identified through professional air and surface sampling to assess the true health risk and determine the appropriate remediation protocol, as outlined by standards such as the UAE's DM Guidelines and best practices from IICRC.

For the safety of your family, I strongly advise against disturbing the area. A certified professional company like Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment, identify the exact moisture source (often condensation or capillary breach), and provide a scientifically sound remediation plan. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate consultation and to schedule an inspection.
