Can I remove apartment mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Park has been feeling extra humid lately, and I just found a patch of black and green spots in the back of the bedroom wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It’s not huge, maybe the size of my hand, but I’m worried it’s been there a while and might spread. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Based on the description of your apartment in Jumeirah Park, this is a very common issue we encounter in Dubai. The high ambient humidity, combined with year-round air conditioning creating significant temperature differentials, leads to condensation in poorly ventilated spaces like wardrobes and behind furniture.

For a patch the size of your hand, a DIY approach can be attempted, but with critical caveats. The black and green coloration suggests a potential mix of mold species, some of which may be more problematic than others. For a small, surface-level contamination, you can clean it with a solution of detergent and water, or a specialized fungicidal cleaner (vinegar is often insufficient and can merely bleach the mold, not kill the root structure). You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or causing skin irritation. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely, and the cause of the moisture must be addressed. This means improving ventilation in the wardrobe and potentially using a desiccant to control humidity.

However, given the location on porous materials (wood, clothing), there is a high probability that the fungal roots (hyphae) have penetrated deeper than the visible surface. If the mold returns within a few weeks, which is common, this confirms a deeper infestation. Furthermore, if the wall is an exterior wall, the issue could be related to a minor leak or thermal bridging, which requires professional diagnosis.

For peace of mind and to ensure the health of your indoor environment, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the exact species and concentration of spores, which dictates the correct remediation protocol as per UAE standards. This is crucial for effectively resolving the problem and preventing recurrence. For a proper assessment, please call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
