Is AC mold causing our constant cough and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I'm seeing these black speckles spreading on the wall behind the curtain. My husband and I have both had a constant stuffy nose and this dry cough that just won't go away since it started. Is this definitely black mold and could it be the reason we've been feeling so unwell?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a mold infestation, and the symptoms you and your husband are experiencing are a classic presentation of mold-related illness. The black speckles spreading from the AC leak site are a significant red flag. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for microbial growth, such leaks are a primary cause of indoor mold. The condensation from AC units provides the perfect moisture source for mold spores, which are always present in the air, to colonize and proliferate.

The persistent stuffy nose and dry cough are common health effects of exposure to mold, specifically from inhaling mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by colonies. Stachybotrys chartarum, often called "black mold," is one of several species that can cause these symptoms, but other species like Aspergillus and Penicillium are also common in AC systems and can produce similar health impacts.

For your safety, I strongly recommend against attempting to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and toxins, worsening your exposure and contaminating other areas of your home. This situation requires professional assessment and remediation.

Our certified team at Saniservice conducts comprehensive inspections, including air and surface sampling to identify the specific mold species and concentration levels. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol, which involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration, and applying professional-grade antimicrobials to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality guidelines.
