How to safely remove black mold from bathroom grout?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that’s growing in the grout between the bathroom tiles. It’s our guest bathroom in Jumeirah, which we don’t use often, so the ventilation isn't great. I first spotted it a couple of months ago but it’s gotten a lot worse since the humidity kicked in. What's the fastest and most effective way to kill it for good and make sure it's safe for my family?

The black mold you're describing in your Jumeirah bathroom grout is likely Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger, both of which are common in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and can cause respiratory issues like the coughing your children are experiencing. The persistent condensation from year-round AC use, combined with poor ventilation in a seldom-used room, creates an ideal breeding ground.

For a small, surface-level contamination, you can attempt a preliminary clean using a solution of distilled white vinegar or a proprietary EPA-approved fungicide. However, it is critical to understand that this only addresses the visible growth. The mold's hyphae (root system) can penetrate deep into the porous grout and potentially behind the tiles. Scrubbing can also aerosolize toxic spores, exacerbating the health risk.

Given the described health symptoms and the duration of the problem, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY methods are a temporary fix and often lead to rapid regrowth. We adhere to UAE standards and IICRC S520 protocols for mold remediation, which begin with a comprehensive inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of contamination.

The most effective and permanent solution involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, professionally removing the compromised grout, treating the subsurface with antimicrobial agents, and then re-grouting with a mold-inhibitive product. Crucially, we would identify and rectify the source of moisture, which is often inadequate ventilation.
