Can I clean this black mold myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a little bit of water onto the wall behind the guest bedroom dresser. I finally moved it today and found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate on the wall. It’s been humid lately so I’m not sure if this is a new thing. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

As a certified mold remediation specialist operating in the UAE, I strongly advise against using bleach for this type of mold contamination. While it may appear to remove the surface discoloration, bleach is primarily water (over 90%), which can actually feed the mold roots (hyphae) growing deep within the porous drywall. This often leads to a rapid and worse regrowth. More critically, bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and does not address the underlying moisture problem, which in Dubai's humid climate is the absolute key to prevention.
The situation you describe—AC unit condensation leading to hidden mold growth—is extremely common here due to our high humidity and year-round reliance on AC systems. The leak indicates a potential maintenance issue with the condensate drain line or drip pan that must be resolved first. For a patch the size of a dinner plate, the contamination is significant. Disturbing it without proper containment and professional-grade HEPA filtration equipment will aerosolize toxic mold spores, spreading them throughout your apartment's air and potentially into the AC system itself, creating a much larger problem. In accordance with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines, proper remediation requires source identification, containment, removal of affected porous materials, and specialized antimicrobial treatment, not just surface cleaning. For a proper and permanent solution, I recommend a professional inspection. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment, identify the exact species of mold, and resolve the moisture source before performing a safe, guaranteed remediation.
