How to remove and prevent bathroom mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, and I just found black spots in the grout between the wall tiles behind the toilet. We run the exhaust fan during showers, but with the humidity lately, it doesn't seem to be enough. What's the best way to clean this off for good and what else can I do to prevent it from coming back?

The black spots you're describing are a classic sign of mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to our extreme humidity and year-round reliance on air conditioning, which can create significant condensation. The grout is porous, allowing moisture to penetrate and organic material (like soap scum) to accumulate, creating an ideal food source for mold.

For immediate cleaning, I recommend a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water, applied directly to the grout lines. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the surface pigment and does not kill the root structure of the mold, leading to rapid regrowth. Scrub gently with a stiff-bristled brush. For persistent growth, a commercial EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner is more effective. However, this is only a surface-level remedy.

True prevention requires controlling the moisture that allows mold to thrive. While running the exhaust fan during showers is correct, it must be run for at least 30-45 minutes after the shower has ended to fully evacuate the humid air. Wiping down wet surfaces (tiles, glass, fixtures) with a squeegee immediately after use is one of the most effective preventative measures. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is powerful enough for the room's volume and that it is venting directly outside, not into an attic or ceiling void.

Given the musty odor, which often indicates a more established problem, the mold may have spread behind the tiles or into the wall cavity. In such cases, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify hidden sources of moisture and the full extent of the contamination, which is crucial for a permanent solution.
