Is black closet mold urgent and dangerous to sleep near?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom's walk-in closet has had this damp, earthy smell ever since the weather turned really humid a couple of months ago. I finally pulled everything out yesterday and found a patch of black, speckled mold about the size of a dinner plate spreading on the back wall where my clothes are hanging. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, and is it dangerous to sleep in the room tonight?

Based on my professional experience with mold inspection in the UAE, the situation you describe requires immediate attention. The presence of a dinner-plate-sized patch of black, speckled mold on an interior wall, accompanied by a persistent damp odor, indicates an active and established moisture problem, likely from persistent high humidity or a hidden condensation issue behind the wall.

The urgency is high. In Dubai's climate, where high ambient humidity combines with year-round AC use, mold can proliferate rapidly behind walls and in concealed spaces. The primary danger of sleeping in the room is not from the mold itself, but from the continuous inhalation of its airborne spores and mycotoxins, which are being released as the colony is active. This can lead to significant health concerns, including allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, sinus congestion, and exacerbation of asthma, especially with prolonged exposure over hours like during sleep.

I strongly recommend you do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment protocols will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your bedroom and potentially the entire HVAC system. This is a serious case requiring professional assessment.

The remediation process for a case like this involves identifying and correcting the moisture source (often condensation from AC ducts or a cold bridge in the wall), followed by engineering controls to contain the area, HEPA filtration, and safe removal of contaminated materials. Our company, Saniservice, is certified to perform this precise testing and remediation in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards.
